No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
