Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
